Coming up on 2!!

In just a couple of weeks Jack and Maggie will be 23 months old, and just one month shy of 2 years old! It is an exciting thought that we are entering into becoming true big kids, no longer babies. Also somewhat sad as we say goodbye to all the joys of babyhood- the first smile, coo, giggle, crawl, step, word, song, and hug. As we move bravely into the world of toddlers, we miss the time when they were small enough to nestle into the crook of our arms and warm our hearts…but we look forward to the fun journey we have ahead.

The kids get into many adventures in the course of a day.

Jack is a singing and dancing machine! He likes to count, especially when going up or down the steps and he has recently learned the melodies to such fun tunes as “Twinkle, twinkle little star”, “If you’re happy and you know it” and “The itsy bitsy spider”. We have a radio in the kitchen to play music on the iPod, and he will run up to it and scream “Dancing, dancing!” until we play the music and he can dance. He still loves his doggy, Wilma! He gives her hugs and likes to feed her, a habit we are trying to break. He still likes to cuddle, but has becoming less and less interested when he is tired and would rather just be put into his bed to sleep. Meals with Jack are hit or miss. He is very interested in learning how to master silverware, often watching Mommy or Daddy and then trying to copy our movements. He loves treats, especially mini-Reese’s peanut butter cups! Anything with wheels is his favorite toy, and just recently he has become fond of reading books instead of eating them. I think we are even safe to break out new, un-chewed books.

Maggie has a need for speed! Memorial Day weekend we took our first trip of the season to King’s Island. Knowing Jack’s dislike of all things fast and stomach dropping we had Maggie ride the fast big kid ride solo. I wasn’t sure which way this would go. She would either freak out, we’d have to grab her and go OR she would love it! Fortunately, and really not all that surprisingly, it was the latter- she LOVED it! She laughed and yelled “Wee!” and had a blast. Jack rode the cars with her, which they both enjoyed and was perfect for his speed and her desire to move. Maggie loves to run, dance, swing, jump and just be in constant motion. She likes to play with her babies, especially to give them their “paci” and put them “night-night”. She has started to role play; being Mommy, cooking at the kitchen, driving the baby around in the Mommy’s car, and playing with her dollhouse or farm. It is so funny and neat to watch her play independently and hear the things she says while she plays. I’m amazed every day by the small things she absorbs and repeats! Daddy loves to say different things to listen to her repeat them back, some of his favorites, “really?”, “hey, hey, hey, hey” said just like Papa and “hey booger”. Although we have removed the pacifier from daily life, she still gets it at night and for naps. She knows to put it away in her basket and we plan to wean that once we are done with our summer vacation travels. Very recently we’ve taken baby steps toward potty training. She has been interested in the potty for a while, talking about it and understanding the concept. We got a very basic potty that is next to the big potty in the bathroom and Maggie has peed in it a couple of times. She definitely gets the idea and once I’ve talked to the pediatrician for any advice he has on training, I think we will head into full blown potty training. Jack isn’t ready, but that is OK.

In just about a week we leave for our big CA trip! We are going to visit family in Southern CA and then head up to north to Folsom. Flying is going to be a new experience for us all, in addition to the 7-hour drive north, and we can’t wait to see everyone!
